By Horace Palacio: A new tropical threat is brewing in the Atlantic after a period of calm following the devastating Hurricane Beryl. A disorganized cluster of showers and thunderstorms in the eastern Caribbean is showing signs of organization, with the potential to develop into a tropical depression or storm by this weekend.
The next named storm in the Atlantic will be called “Debby.” Forecast models indicate the system will move across the northern Caribbean throughout Friday before approaching the Bahamas or Florida early this weekend. The system’s exact path through the Caribbean will be a determining factor in its development. If it interacts with the mountainous terrain of Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, or eastern Cuba, its organization may be disrupted. However, if it skirts north of these islands, it could intensify sooner.
Regardless of when it forms, the abnormally warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico are expected to fuel the system’s strengthening. The eventual path of the storm remains uncertain, with possibilities ranging from the eastern Gulf of Mexico to the southeastern US coast. Its timing and intensity of organization will play a role in determining its trajectory.
This developing threat aligns with the typically active period of hurricane season when warm ocean waters and reduced wind shear create favorable conditions for storm development. This year, however, ocean temperatures have been exceptionally warm, contributing to Beryl’s rapid intensification into a Category 5 hurricane in early July.
The unusually warm waters, combined with the developing La Niña phenomenon, have led forecasters to predict a hyperactive hurricane season. The season began with Tropical Storm Alberto in mid-June, followed by the record-breaking Beryl and short-lived Tropical Storm Chris.
With this new tropical threat looming, Breaking Belize News urges residents to closely monitor forecasts and be prepared for possible changes in weather conditions.
