By Aaron Humes: The Belize Council for the Visually Impaired, the most prominent institution dedicated to helping the visually impaired, is officially opening an expanded clinic and rehabilitation center.
The Belize Council for the Visually Impaired (BCVI) and the Belize City Lions Club next door collaborated on the expansion, which has been several years in the making. As noted by Minister of Education Francis Fonseca, they are both service-oriented institutions: to others and to the community.
Dr. Glen Espadas traced the history of the building, which was the Ear, Nose, Throat, and Eye Clinic before coming under the partnership of the BCVI and the Ministry of Health. The latest expansion was supported by Lions Club International and allows the continued support of visually impaired persons who can obtain eye testing, low-cost glasses, eye medicines, and surgery for glaucoma and cataracts, the most common and dangerous diseases affecting the eyes.
