Belize Weather: Sun, showers, and a potential tropical threat

By Horace Palacio: Belizeans can expect a mix of sun and clouds today, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms expected to impact mainly central and southern areas this morning, shifting to inland areas this afternoon, and then along the coast tonight. The rest of the country can anticipate isolated showers.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize has indicated that these conditions are due to lingering moist and unstable air over the region. Temperatures along the coast will range from 81°F (27°C) to 89°F (32°C), while inland areas will see slightly higher temperatures, ranging from 74°F (23°C) to 94°F (34°C).

Mariners should expect light chop with waves between 2 to 4 feet, and winds shifting from light and variable to north-northeast at 5-10 knots.

Meanwhile, all eyes are on a well-defined tropical wave currently producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms over Hispaniola, eastern Cuba, southeastern Bahamas, and Jamaica. This system has a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours as it moves over Cuba and the Florida Straits.

The forecast for Saturday and Saturday night predicts partly cloudy to cloudy skies with a few showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly along the coast on Saturday morning and shifting to the Maya Mountains in the afternoon. Shower activity is expected to be generally isolated Saturday night.
