Passing of Former Chief Justice of Belize, Dr the Hon Abdulai O. Conteh

It is with great sorrow and a profound sense of loss that the Chief Justice, Hon. Madam Louise Esther Blenman, on behalf of the Judiciary of Belize, acknowledges the passing of Former Chief Justice Dr the Hon Abdulai O. Conteh, who served as the 28th Chief Justice of Belize. Former Chief Justice’s tenure, from 2000 to 2010, was marked by his unwavering dedication to the rule of law, his fidelity to the constitution of Belize, and his excellent contributions to the jurisprudence of Belize. Dr Conteh leaves behind a rich and impressive legacy, having been known for his erudition and brilliant legal mind. He served Belize with distinction. As an outstanding jurist, he was fair and fearless.

Former Chief Justice’s leadership brought much-needed stability and reform to our judicial system. His tenure was characterized by his commitment to upholding the principles of justice and equality, as well as his modernization of the court system in Belize. His landmark rulings stood the test of time as an example of judicial excellence.

Throughout his decade on the bench, Former Chief Justice Conteh introduced numerous reforms that strengthened the administration of justice in Belize. He implemented in 2005, new Judges’ Rules, Supreme Court Rules, and a Code of Ethics and established a rigorous system for the delivery and practice of law. Former Chief Justice’s impact extended beyond Belize; his exemplary contribution to Caribbean jurisprudence was recognized and respected across the region and the wider Commonwealth. He was renowned for his erudite judgments and his scholarship in the wider Caribbean.

As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life and legacy. Former Chief Justice Conteh was not only a distinguished jurist but also a mentor, a guide, and a source of inspiration for many in the legal community. His work has laid a solid foundation for future generations, and his legacy will continue to inspire those of us who come after him.

On behalf of the Judiciary and people of Belize, Hon. Chief Justice Blenman extends deepest condolences to Former Chief Conteh’s family, friends, and colleagues. May his soul continue to rest in perfect peace.
