By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 2024-2025 Premier League of Belize (PLB) Opening Season will kick off on Saturday, August 3, at 7:30 pm at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk with a revamped Progresso side taking on the Belmopan Bandits.
Last season, Progresso failed to make the playoffs, so this season the club is bolstering the squad from the top down.
To that end Progresso, who have changed their team colours to orange along with a new logo (now orange as well), have hired Wilmer Garcia as their new coach. Garcia, who was one of Belize’s best forwards in his day, has recently coached Altitude to a PLB championship and last season was the coach in charge of Police Benque.

Additionally, they have added Wayne Wade, of Juventus fame, to their coaching staff as well.
On top of that they have welcomed back goalkeeper Charles Tillett and forward Jonard Castillo, and have added other players like Michael Palacio from Verdes and Colombians Anderson Córdoba, Sebastián and Jhon Vergara from Benque United, while retaining Andir Chi, to just mention a few.
The Bandits haven’t made any announcement other than they were starting training and tryouts last Monday, July 29.
PLB opening weekend will also feature two games on Sunday, August 4. Defending champions Port Layola host the San Pedro Pirates at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City, while Verdes take on Wagiya at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio. Both matches kick off at 4:00 pm.
