By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize City Defenders now lead the Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL) Best of Five Final Series two games to one (2-1) after whipping Benny’s Belize Hurricanes 81-75 on Friday, August 2, in what they termed as ‘Game 3.1’, since the third game had to be replayed following a ruling by the BEBL’s Appeals Tribunal.

The Bekize City Defenders had won the first Game Three 87-86, but following a Protest Committee ruling in favor of replaying the final 36 seconds after the Benny’s Belize Hurricanes protested that the two points deducted from their score and the additional time added to the clock with possession awarded to the Defenders was unfair, the Defenders appealed the decision. The appeal backfired when the BEBL’s Appeals Tribunal ruled that the game should be replayed.

On Friday night at the Belize City Civic Center, regular season MVP Nigel Jones led the Defenders in the grudge game with 25 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Daniel Estes scored 13 points, six rebounds, and one assist. Devin Daly added 12 points, one rebound, one steal, and one block. Shane Pratt chipped in ten points, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. John Kelly and D’von Campbell added nine each. Kelly tallied seven rebounds, one assist, and one block while Campbell totaled six rebounds, five assists, and one steal. Richard Smith III was good for 12 rebounds, four assists, and six blocks.

The Hurricanes were led by Jammel Harris, who tallied 21 points, three rebounds, two assists, four steals, and one block. Victor Evans scored 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and made five assists and a block. Glency Lopez contributed 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Marquise Cunningham added ten points, eight rebounds, and one steal.

Game 4 is set for Sunday at 6:00 pm at the Belize City Civic Center.

Leading the series 2-1, the Defenders can clinch on Sunday. Before Friday night’s game, the Hurricanes had taken Game One 87-63 while the Defenders had picked up Game Two 62-61.
