International News: U.S. condemns flawed Venezuela Presidential Election, supports Opposition Leader

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States has expressed serious concerns over Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election, citing significant flaws in the process.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken praised the Venezuelan people for their participation but criticized the Maduro-controlled National Electoral Council (CNE) for its handling of the vote.

Blinken noted that the CNE’s swift announcement of Nicolás Maduro as the election winner lacked transparency and evidence.

Blinken says that the CNE has failed to release detailed vote data, undermining the credibility of its results.

In contrast, the opposition’s publication of over 80 percent of tally sheets, supported by independent observers and exit polls, indicates that Edmundo González Urrutia won the election by a substantial margin.

The U.S. also condemned Maduro’s threats against opposition leaders and called for the release of those detained for peacefully participating in the election.

Blinken urged Venezuelan parties to engage in a peaceful transition process in line with democratic principles and reaffirmed the U.S.’s commitment to supporting Venezuela’s return to democratic norms.
