By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that there is “overwhelming evidence” showing that Edmundo González won Venezuela’s recent presidential election, despite incumbent Nicolás Maduro’s disputed declaration of victory.
“Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people that Edmundo González Urrutia won the most votes in Venezuela’s 28 July presidential election,” Blinken said.
Blinken’s remarks follow calls from Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia for Venezuela to release full election details.
The US State Department has confirmed Blinken congratulated González and opposition leader María Corina Machado, expressing concern for their safety and condemning political violence.
Venezuela’s election authority has ratified Maduro’s victory with 52% of the vote compared to González’s 43%, based on 97% of votes counted.
Maduro has accused the opposition of fabricating evidence and claimed the US is behind what he describes as a coup attempt.
The disputed results have led to protests across Venezuela.
According to the BBC, the US, EU, and other G7 countries are demanding detailed voting data, while Venezuelan allies China, Russia, and Iran have recognized Maduro’s win.
In response, González’s camp, with access to a majority of voting receipts, maintains their candidate won by a significant margin. Opposition leader Machado, currently in hiding, has called for mass demonstrations and appeals for international intervention.
Several countries, including Argentina, Ecuador, Uruguay, Costa Rica, and Peru, have recognized González as the president-elect, while Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico are calling for an impartial verification of the election results.
