By Aaron Humes: The fourth system of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is on the move in the Gulf of Mexico, although it will not impact Belize.
The 3 p.m. Belize time update from the National Hurricane Center in Miami has upgraded Tropical Depression Four to Tropical Storm Debby. The storm is currently located west-southwest of Key West in the Florida Keys.
Debby is currently moving northwesterly at 14 miles per hour. The forecast indicates that this movement will continue tonight, followed by a turn to the north on Sunday and a slower northeastward motion on Sunday night and Monday.
It’s expected that Debby will move across the southeastern and eastern Gulf of Mexico tonight and Sunday, eventually reaching the Florida Gulf Coast late Sunday night or Monday.
Debby has maximum sustained winds near 40 miles per hour with higher gusts. It is anticipated that Debby will strengthen as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico and could possibly reach hurricane strength by the time it reaches the Florida Gulf Coast. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles to the east of the center.
