Belize City fisherman fined for crack pipe possession

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Jim Albert Ramirez, a 26-year-old fisherman of Belize City, was convicted and fined on Friday for possession of a crack pipe. Ramirez appeared unrepresented before a Magistrate in Court #5, where he faced one count of possession of a pipe.

Police reported that on Wednesday, July 30, 2024, at #10 Victoria Street, Belize City, Ramirez was found with a three-inch grey metal pipe designed for smoking drugs. Ramirez, who has a prior conviction for a similar offense, pleaded guilty and offered no defense.

Despite his previous conviction, the Magistrate imposed a non-custodial sentence, fining Ramirez $100 plus a $5 court fee, to be paid by August 30, 2024. Failure to pay will result in a one-week imprisonment. Court records indicate Ramirez is already in debt to the court for over $1,000 from past convictions, including a $1,000 fine for fishing without a license and another $100 fine for possession of a pipe.

The incident leading to Ramirez’s latest conviction occurred around 11:00 a.m. when police officers, responding to reports of a firearm possession, conducted a patrol on the north side of Belize City. Police who responded to the incident informed Ramirez and two others of the search. During the search, a metal pipe fell from inside Ramirez’s shirt.

The Magistrate warned Ramirez that any future offenses could lead to imprisonment, urging him to resolve his outstanding fines to avoid jail time.
