Potential tropical storm brewing: Belize in the crosshairs of a developing system

Posted: Sunday, August 4, 2024. 11:32 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: Belize and the wider Caribbean region are keeping a watchful eye on a developing tropical wave currently situated east of the Windward Islands. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring this system, which is already producing showers and thunderstorms and is predicted to track westward at approximately 20 mph.

While the NHC assesses the chance of immediate formation as low, with a 10% probability within the next 48 hours and 20% within the next week, the potential for gradual development over the upcoming days is a cause for concern.

Current projections indicate that the tropical wave is likely to traverse the Windward Islands early in the week, bringing with it a period of heightened rainfall and thunderstorm activity. Subsequently, it is anticipated to progress into the central and western Caribbean Sea towards the middle to latter part of the week, a path that could directly impact Belize.

The NHC remains vigilant, committed to monitoring the evolution of this tropical wave and issuing timely advisories. Residents across the Windward Islands and the broader Caribbean, including Belize, are strongly advised to stay abreast of the latest developments and be prepared for potential impacts.

Adding another layer of complexity to the situation is Tropical Storm Debby, currently active in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Though presently unrelated to the tropical wave, the paths of these two systems might converge later in the week, creating a scenario that demands heightened attention.
