Premier League of Belize: Andir Chi leads Progresso in 3-0 thumping of Belmopan Bandits in season opener

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Andir Chi scored a brace to lead the revamped Progresso FC in their 2024-2025 Premier League of Belize (PLB) Opening Season opener over the Belmopan Bandits at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk on Saturday evening.

Chi scored in the 36^th and 85^th minutes. Michael Palacio converted the other goal from a penalty kick in the 63^rd minute after he was fouled by Bandits’ Amani Hope.

Progresso, now under the guidance of Head Coach Wilmer Garcia, have reinforced with the likes of team goalkeeper Charles Tillett, forwards Jonard Castillo, Michael Palacio, and Colombians Anderson Córdoba (midfielder), Sebastián Vergara (forward), and Jhon Vergara (defender). Along with Tinoco Velasquez, Alwin Zelaya, and Andir Chi, to name just a few, they should be a force that will have better probabilities of making the playoffs than the team they had last season.

The Bandits have their work cut out for them.

Incidentally, Progresso have changed their main uniform from blue to orange in representation of Orange Walk, where they play.

The PLB opening weekend continues with two matches on Sunday, August 4. Defending champions Port Layola open against the returning San Pedro Pirates at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City, while Verdes tackle old rivals Wagiya at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio. Both matches kick off at 4:00 pm.
