Premier League of Belize: Verdes face Wagiya in season opener in Cayo

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes are opening their bid to win the six-team 2024-2025 Premier League of Belize (PLB) Opening Season against their old rivals, Wagiya, on Sunday. The match is set for 4:00 pm at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio.

Verdes and Wagiya are the oldest clubs in Belize’s top football league, dating back to the late eighties.

While Verdes had no trouble signing up for the current season, Wagiya had to clear some hurdles to get registered in the FIFA Connect platform but finally got in. Wagiya owner/manager Nelson Moss swore his club wouldn’t be left out. On Sunday, they’re out to give their old nemesis a good battle in their own backyard in San Ignacio.

Verdes are coming off a number of good practice matches against Guatemalan sides and appear better prepared than their Dangriga rivals. How much those games have helped them will be seen when they take the field on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, in the season’s opening match, Progresso blanked the Belmopan Bandits 3-0 in Orange Walk on Saturday night.

The third match will feature champions Port Layola against San Pedro Pirates, also at 4:00 pm on Sunday, at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City.
