By Hugh O’Brien: Julien Alfred who hails from the small Caribbean island of St. Lucia is the fastest woman in the world at least according to her performance in the 100 metres (m) at the Paris Olympics.
Alfred clinched the gold medal in the Women’s 100m finals on Saturday in Paris, displaying her speed and dominance in a sensational finish, and with fans cheering for her all over the Caribbean. Clocking 10.72 seconds (s), the race was not even close; she finished 0.15s faster than Sha’Carri Richardson (10.87s) from the US and who was considered the favourite to win the race.
With this victory, Alfred becomes St. Lucia’s first ever Olympic champion while also allowing the Caribbean to retain its gold medal dominance over the US in the 100m for 28 years now.
23-year-old Julien Alfred is currently competing in the 200m heats and fans throughout the Caribbean are looking forward to her reaching and hopefully winning the 200m finals as well at the Paris Olympics.
For comparison, Belize is 36.3 times bigger than St. Lucia which is only 616 sq. km. in size. In 2022, the population of St. Lucia was just under 180,000 people, about half the population of Belize.
Breaking Belize News (BBN) join our sisters and brothers in St. Lucia and the Caribbean in celebrating this historic achievement. It is a demonstration of what is possible even by small nations when the athlete has the support and puts in the hard work, dedication, perseverance and will to succeed.
