Belize clinches Gold at 2nd Annual Emancipation Day Basketball tournament in Taiwan

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In a thrilling conclusion to the 2nd Annual Emancipation Day Basketball Tournament in Taiwan, Belize emerged victorious, claiming the gold medal and a prize of $15,000 NTD.

The tournament, held to celebrate Emancipation Day and foster Caribbean unity in Taiwan, witnessed a series of games showcasing the talent and spirit of Caribbean teams.

In the elimination round, Belize demonstrated their prowess with a narrow 27-24 victory over Saint Lucia.

The team’s journey to the top was capped with a dramatic final against Haiti, where Belize triumphed in a double-overtime thriller with a score of 41-40.

The final standings of the tournament are as follows:

First Place: Belize
Second Place: Haiti
Third Place: Saint Kitts and Nevis
Fourth Place: Saint Lucia
Fifth Place: Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (returning champions)

Belize’s Ambassador to Taiwan, Dr. Candice Pitts said that the Emancipation Day Basketball Tournament serves as a vibrant celebration of Caribbean history, culture, and identity. It also provides a platform for the Caribbean community in Taiwan to come together and commemorate their shared heritage.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participating teams for their enthusiasm and sportsmanship. Special congratulations go to the Belize team for their outstanding performance and for bringing the gold home to Belize,” the Embassy said.
