By Breaking Belize News Staff: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued a strong condemnation regarding alleged electoral fraud linked to the San Ignacio office of the Elections and Boundaries Department.

The UDP says that in July 2024, an unusual number of new voter registrations occurred at several addresses in San Ignacio, raising suspicions of fraudulent activity.

Specifically, the UDP identified 4 addresses where substantial numbers of new voters with varying surnames have been registered, despite the questionable status of these residences.

Details of the allegations include:

  • Lamanai Street: 22 new voters with 20 different surnames registered at a house with no number listed.
  • Cahal Pech Street: 16 new voters with 14 different surnames registered at what appears to be an empty house.
  • Constellation Boulevard: 22 new voters with 20 different surnames registered at a house with no number listed.
  • Martin Galvez Boulevard: 7 new voters with 7 different surnames registered at a house with no number listed.

“Alternately, unconfirmed reports also suggest that this is an outright stealing of registered voters without the knowledge of area representatives. The main constituencies from which voters are being transferred are Belize Rural Central, Cayo West, Pickstock, Freetown and Dangriga.

The United Democratic Party calls on the Prime Minister to confirm or deny whether he has any knowledge and/or involvement in this elaborate scheme that apparently aims to provide life support to one of their weakest area representatives,” the UDP release said.

In addition, the UDP called on the Organization of American States, the United Nations, and the United States Embassy, to intervene.

“Observer missions on election day are futile and worthless if nothing is done to stem the blatant electoral fraud occurring at this time. We further invite these organizations, the Chief Elections Officer, the Elections and Boundaries Commission and the Ministry with responsibility for the Elections and Boundaries Department to conduct their own independent investigation on the above-mentioned addresses,” the UDP added.

Furthermore, the UDP called on the Minister responsible for Elections and Boundaries, the Prime Minister, and the Elections and Boundaries Commission to halt what they describe as illegal registration practices and to investigate the four addresses in question.

The UDP warns that if such fraudulent practices are not addressed, they represent a significant threat to Belize’s parliamentary democracy.
