Belize shark attack leaves teenage girl seriously injured

By Horace Palacio: A 15-year-old girl was attacked by sharks while swimming near Halfmoon Caye in Belize today. The girl, identified as Annabelle Carlson, was on a diving excursion with Belize Dive Pro when the incident occurred.

After completing a dive, Carlson re-entered the water between Hot Caye and Halfmoon Caye, where she was attacked by the shark. The crew of the dive vessel, captained by Gilbert Estell, immediately brought her to the Coast Guard Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Calabash.

Coast Guard personnel and officials from TASA provided emergency medical treatment at the FOB. Carlson, her mother Kellie Carlson, and a dive guide were then airlifted by an Astrum helicopter to Belize Healthcare Partners in Belize City for further medical care.

The extent of Carlson’s injuries is not yet known.
