By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Over the weekend, the UDP attempted to conduct a National Party Council meeting that was later cancelled due to ongoing rifts inside the UDP.
According to reports, there was a shouting match between those supporting Shyne Barrow as the UDP leader and those hoping for a national convention to unseat him.
UDP Mayor Earl Trapp says that the UDP is in shambles.
“Basically, I believe that our party are in shambles we are at the point of honestly being destroyed and what I was hoping is that this letter would have sent a strong signal not only to Mr Patrick Faber but to the 31 delegates you know we need to look at the bigger picture the bigger picture one where we see that the party is bigger than us. Another one they have not been seeing is the poor, the large number of UDP supporters that are suffering. I am trying to show them this and if they fail then I am not to blame I was just trying to do my part and my disappointment was that i submitted this letter for the chairman and half an hour later it was leaked out you know and so in that I was very disappointed,” Trapp said in an interview with 7News Belize.
In addition, Trapp said that after he sent that letter, he began receiving texts in support of Faber and he rescinded the letter.
“But as you saw what happened on Saturday I wasn’t there it was very chaotic and sad but it’s reality it’s sad and it is a shame.
We might not like each other but the least we can do is respect each other so Mr Faber might not like Shyne as the leader but at least respect him as the leader and let us move forward and I mean let nature decide where we are going but that basically it we might not like each other but let us respect each other,” Trapp added.
Trapp said that at this time, “it doesn’t look good for the party.”
