By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Venezuelan Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino has pledged the military’s “absolute loyalty” to President Nicolás Maduro, following his declared victory in the recent election.
Speaking on state television, Padrino, flanked by senior military and police officials, condemned opposition calls for military support for the people, which the government has interpreted as a call for defection.
Opposition leaders Edmundo Gonzalez and Maria Corina Machado, who contest the election results, have been targeted by a criminal investigation.
Machado has rejected calls for fear and vowed to continue their protests.
The July 28 election results remain disputed, with opposition claims of a substantial defeat for Maduro and a lack of transparency from the electoral authority.
In addition, several Latin American leaders have denounced Venezuelan election fraud.
The Venezuelan Government has yet to release detailed ballot information, as the electoral website remains down.
