Orange Walk Police: Young man shot multiple times in targeted attack

By Horace Palacio: A 20-year-old man was fatally shot in an ambush-style attack on Tuesday night in Orange Walk Town. Police responded to reports of gunfire on Rio Grande Street and discovered the victim, Carlos Canelo, deceased in his yard on Monkey River Street.

Initial investigation suggests Canelo was targeted by an unknown assailant who lay in wait for him as he returned home from speaking with a female companion. He was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the Northern Regional Hospital.

The scene was processed for evidence, and police recovered six 40-caliber expended shells and three slugs. A post mortem examination revealed Canelo sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head, chest, left arm, and left foot.

Police have not yet identified any suspects and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
