Belize City to get new tertiary level hospital after KHMH review

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness has recommended, and Cabinet has endorsed, to construct a new modern tertiary level patient-friendly hospital in Belize City.

It follows a study by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) conducted on the physical and functional infrastructure of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), the City’s and Belize District’s sole hospital and sole tertiary-level hospital in the country. A Cabinet brief issued today said there were intensive discussions on the findings of that study.

KHMH was founded in 1995 as the replacement for the public Belize City Hospital that was moved from Eve Street, but is managed by a private authority with support from the Ministry of Health and Wellness. The study does not indicate whether KHMH would be kept open or where the new hospital should be built, though it most likely will be on the Southside.

The Government has obtained a US$45 million development loan for the construction of the University Hospital in Belmopan from the Saudi Fund and broke ground for a full-fledged public hospital in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, in addition to improvements at major District hospitals and clinics countrywide.
