Concacaf Central American Cup: Port Layola face Honduran champions Olimpia on Thursday in Belmopan

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean club Port Layola on Thursday face Honduran champions Olimpia, considered to be much stronger than Guatemalan club Antigua GFC, which defeated Port 4-1 last week at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan in the Concacaf Central American Cup. Olimpia are coming off a 3-0 drubbing of Panama’s CA Independiente last Thursday at the Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Thursday’s match kicks off at 6:00 pm at the FFB Stadium.

Port Layola will now be under the direction of coach Julius Dawson, who was assistant to Head Coach Charlie Slusher up to last Sunday’s 0-0 draw against the San Pedro Pirates in the opening match of the 2024-2025 Premier League of Belize Opening Season. Dawson has been with Port Layola for the last few seasons.

Last PLB season’s Latrell Middleton and Rene Leslie are gelling on the field, as could be seen against Antigua when Middleton made the cross that was hammered into goal by Leslie. Unfortunately for Port, that was their only goal as both were rested down the stretch. Hopefully, on Thursday, Dawson will give them more playing time against the Honduran juggernaut.

Middleton told Breaking Belize News that Leslie and he are now ‘gelling’ and he hopes they can play a much better game on Thursday.

Port also announced the return of Peruvian midfielder Mathías Barriga Bandini.

Incidentally, on Tuesday, Antigua drew 0-0 with Port’s next rival, El Salvador’s Águila.

Port will face Águila at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at Santa Tecla’s Estadio Las Delicias in El Salvador. Their final group match will have them traveling to Panama to take on CA Independiente (CAI) at Estadio Rommel Fernández in Panama City at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.
