Police investigate alleged assault, death threats made at UDP National Party Council meeting

By Aaron Humes: The ugly conclusion to Saturday’s meeting of the United Democratic Party National Party Council is now being investigated by police.

Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow has spoken to police investigators according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, but the Department intends to speak to all who were present to find out exactly what happened: “I have directed the police to investigate but at the end of the day I believe that we must be fair in our investigation and so my instruction to the investigators is to make sure that they interview every persons who were around and get their version of what took place and having obtained the versions of everybody who were present then we will come to determination if in fact [there is] sufficient there to further a persecution against Beverly Williams.”

Williams, the party’s second deputy party leader, allegedly responded to comments Barrow made by getting physical with others in the room and reportedly threatening to send someone to kill him. She has declined public comment and so far the Commissioner has said he hasn’t spoken to her either.

Depending on the severity of the words used, the recent amendments to the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act and others may up the charges, he added, though he needs to see exactly what was reportedly said: “It would, I’m not too sure of the exact words that were used, I have not seen the statement. So I would have to read the statement and see exactly what were the words used. If it is a threat of death or just ordinary threatening words, I’d have to see.”
