Police round up alleged gang members following fatal robbery in Belize City

Posted: Thursday, August 8, 2024. 9:59 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: In the aftermath of a botched robbery on Freetown Road that left one suspect dead and three others facing criminal charges, Belize City police have rounded up several alleged gang members in an effort to prevent retaliatory violence.

The robbery, which occurred Tuesday morning, saw a group of men target a business on the Northside. During the incident, 33-year-old Leroy Smith, one of the robbers, was shot and killed inside the establishment by the business owner. In response, authorities have detained individuals connected to various gangs, including members of the notorious Taylors Alley gang, to prevent any potential gang-related retaliation.

Among those detained under a State of Emergency (SOE) are well-known criminal figures Charles Middleton, Paul Smith, Randy Green, Charles Nolberto, and Jaheim Flowers, all affiliated with Taylors Alley. Gabriel Torres and Mark Waight, linked to the Southside Gang (SSG), as well as Degron Joseph and Kentroy McKay of the George Street Gang (GSG), have also been taken into custody.

Credible sources indicate that witnesses related to the Freetown Road robbery have faced threats and intimidation, allegedly from members of Taylors Alley. This prompted the detention of certain gang members, including those involved in the robbery: Harvey Sambula, Leroy Garoy, and Malique Chavez, who were arraigned today for aggravated burglary.
