2024 Concacaf Girls’ U-15 League B Championship: Belize beat Suriname 2-1, secure 11th place

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The U-15 Belize Girls National Team (BGNT) defeated Suriname 2-0 on two early first half goals and claime the 11^th place ranking in the V Concacaf Girls’ U-15 Championship (League B) at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima, Trinidad and Tobago.

Shanalee Smith scored both of Belize’s goals against the South American side in the fourth and 16^th minutes. Smith now leads all Belize scorers with four goals after also scoring a brace in the 3-2 win over Barbados on Thursday. Betsy Perez and Arella Cal scored one each against Honduras and Barbados, respectively.

Belize won two games and lost two, a 6-1 defeat to Honduras on Monday and a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Cuba on Tuesday.

Finishing third in Group E, Belize played Suriname, who replaced the US Virgin Islands, for 11^th place. The US Virgin Islands (USVI), who finished third in Group D, had flight schedule problems. They asked Concacaf to play the game against Belize earlier on Friday so they wouldn’t miss their flight back home. Concacaf denied their request substituting them with Suriname, who were next in line.

Earlier today, the Dominican Republic and Honduras advanced to the finals. The Dominican Republic defeating hosts Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 in the first semifinal while Honduras beat Guatemala 2-0 in the other semifinal.

Honduras will play the Final on Sunday against the Dominican Republic at 11:00 am Trinidad time (9:00 am Belize time). Guatemala will face Trinidad and Tobago for Third Place at 9:00 am Trinidad time (7:00 am Belize time).

Bermuda won fifth place earlier on Friday with a 2-0 win over Cuba. Antigua and Barbuda claimed seventh place with a similar 2-0 over Curaçao. Cayman Isands took ninth place on a 1-0 win over invited guests Trinidad High Performance. And, Barbados placed 13^th defeating Grenada 3-0.ce on a 1-0 win over invited guests Trinidad High Performance. And, Barbados placed 13^th defeating Grenada 3-0.
