2024 Concacaf Girls’ U-15 League B Championship: Belize play Suriname instead of US Virgin Islands on Friday for 11th place

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Under-15 Belize Girls National Team (BGNT) will be playing Suriname for 11th place on Friday at 3:00 pm Trinidad time (1:00 pm Belize time) at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima, Trinidad and Tobago in the V Concacaf Girls’ U-15 Championship (League B). That’s according to the official schedule published by Concacaf.

Belize should have played the US Virgin Islands (USVI) but flight problems caused Concacaf to change Belize’s rival.

As far as standings go, Belize, who finished third in Group E with three points, should be playing the US Virgin Islands, who finished third in Group D with two points, but Concacaf paired Belize with Suriname, who finished fourth in their group with no points.

By general overall standings when all the groups’ standings are compared, the 11th place team (Belize) should be playing the 12th place team (US Virgin Islands) for the 11th place ranking.

A check with the U.S. Virgin Islands Soccer Federation said the time of the match conflicted with their flight back home. The USVI Soccer Federation asked Concacaf to reschedule the match for an earlier time but were told that couldn’t happen.

So, Concacaf dropped the USVI and replaced them with Suriname, who finished 13th in the general ranking. Three teams finished without points, but Suriname (-3) finished better in goal difference than Barbados (-9) and Grenada (-13). These last two are now playing for 13th place. The US Virgin Islands aren’t playing for final ranking and will more than likely be placed 15th despite finishing with a better record than three teams.

So far, Betsy Perez (against Honduras) and Shanalee Smith (2) and Arella Cal (against Barbados) are Belize’s scorers in the tournament.
