By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has escalated his efforts to control information in the wake of a disputed presidential election.
According to the Associated Press, this week, Maduro announced a 10-day ban on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, accusing its owner, Elon Musk, of promoting hatred and unrest.
The move follows widespread skepticism about Maduro’s claimed victory in the July 28 election.
Electoral authorities have yet to release detailed results, while opposition groups argue that voting data shows Maduro lost by a significant margin.
Protests have erupted, leading to over 2,000 arrests and 24 reported deaths.
Maduro’s government has also targeted Meta’s WhatsApp, a key communication tool in Venezuela.
He publicly deleted the app from his phone during a TV show and urged supporters to switch to Telegram.
Experts view these actions as part of a broader strategy to suppress dissent and control public perception.
