International News: Mexican Drug Lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada claims forced flight to U.S.

Posted: Saturday, August 10, 2024. 2:37 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada has claimed that he was deceived and forcibly transported to the U.S. by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s son last month.

In a statement released by Zambada’s lawyer, the drug lord describes being ambushed during a meeting he believed was with Guzman Lopez and Sinaloa state officials, including Governor Ruben Rocha and Hector Cuen.

According to Reuters, Zambada said he was first approached by Cuen at a ranch near Culiacan and then led by Guzman Lopez into a dark room, where he was attacked, bound, and hooded.

He was then taken to a landing strip and forced onto a plane bound for the U.S. with only Guzman Lopez, the pilot, and himself onboard.

The Guzman family’s lawyer disputes Zambada’s account, asserting that the transfer was a voluntary surrender following negotiations with U.S. authorities.

The U.S. embassy in Mexico confirmed that Guzman Lopez surrendered voluntarily, though it appeared Zambada’s transfer was involuntary.

Zambada also alleged that Cuen was killed during his abduction and that a state police officer and a bodyguard who accompanied him are missing.

Local authorities had previously reported that Cuen was killed in a carjacking in Culiacan.

Both Zambada and Guzman Lopez have pleaded not guilty to drug-trafficking charges in the U.S.
