Premier Women’s League of Belize: Jewel Fury clinch national championship with 2-0 win over Sagitun GIRLZ

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Jewel Fury won the first-ever Premier Women’s League of Belize Opening Championship on Saturday night with a 2-0 victory over Sagitun GIRLZ in the second leg of the Finals at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan.

The first Final had ended in a 0-0 deadlock at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence the week before.

Shendra Ophelia Casimiro scored a brace in the 40^th and 54^th minutes to secure the first PWLB title for the Belmopan side, which has now won six national titles.

“We are proud to be the CHAMPIONS of the first ever Premier Women’s League of Belize,” Jewel Fury said in a celebratory post on social media on Sunday.

“Jewel fury goes down in history once again. The Sagitun Girlz, while having to settle for second place, also thanked fans and supporters.

“This one’s especially dedicated to our loyal fans!” the Sagitun GIRLZ said in a thank you social media post.

“Bit by bit we’ve come to be in your hearts and we’ve felt the love! We truly appreciate all you do for us and promise to keep giving you all our very best!”

Before this season, Belizean clubs had played under the National Amateur Women’s League (NAWL).

The Sagitun GIRLZ were the last NAWL Champions. They recently represented the country in the Central American Women’s Cup in Guatemala City. As previous five-time winners of the NAWL championship, Jewel Fury had also represented Belize in the regional tournament prior to the Sagitun GIRLZ.
