By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Orientation for the 2024 Taiwan MOFA and TaiwanICDF Scholarship Recipients was co-hosted by the Taiwan Embassy in Belize and Belize Taiwan Alumni Society (BTAS) on August 10th, 2024 at Belize Best Western Biltmore Plaza.
A total of 44 scholarship recipients, 26 by Taiwan MOFA Scholarship, and 18 by the TaiwanICDF Scholarship, were awarded at the ceremony.
Half of the awardees will study Mandarin Chinese in a language center before they enroll in a degree program.
Their studies focus on various fields of expertise, including digital media, international affairs, finance, sustainable energy, tropical agriculture, public health, computer science and information technology.
Ambassador Lily Li-Wen Hsu congratulated the 44 aspiring young Belizean awardees.
Ambassador Hsu reiterated that Taiwan offers the scholarship programs to empower young Belizeans and hopes after being equipped with the knowledge and skills needed, they will contribute to the development of Belize.
The Taiwan Ambassador also extended best wishes to all young Belizean students for a fruitful study and help to promote people-to-people understanding, thus forge stronger bonds between the two nations.
Ambassador Hsu also invited the scholarship recipients to join the “35 years of Taiwan-Belize friendship Art Competition” and the Taiwan Youth Ambassadors’ upcoming Performance held in Bliss Center on August 24th.
Special invited guests included Dame Froyla Tzalam, Governor-General of Belize, and Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Education, Culture, Science and Technology.
Governor General Tzalam and Minister Fonseca thanked Taiwan for continuing to provide scholarship opportunities and quality education for young Belizeans.
Dame Froyla Tzalam emphasized the purpose of advanced education is more than finding a job, rather, pursuing liberal, social and economic development in a nation.
The Governor General told the scholarship recipients to learn but also ask questions, as critical thinking is the way for people to become problem-solvers, and thus help build Belize’s national resilience.
She ended with high expectations for these young students, and requested them to bring positive outcomes back to Belize once they complete their studies in Taiwan and continue contributing to the Belizean society.
Minister Fonseca shared that education is the key to unlock the potential of young people. Knowledge and discipline will bring them a quality professional, personal and civic life.
Minister Fonseca wished the scholarship recipients all the best, and tasked them to become Belizean ambassadors to Taiwan, and return to Belize with strong expertise, pride and dignity.
Distinguished alumni Dr. Gilroy Middleton, CEO in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Transport, and Alobi Young, President of Belize Taiwan Alumni Society (BTAS), both shared their insights towards education as well as their valuable experiences when studied in Taiwan.
A welcome video message was provided by Belize Taiwan Association (BTA) to better prepare the incoming students for a smooth transition to their new lives in Taiwan before departure.
Scholarship recipient representative Fredezia April Lambey also sincerely wished all the scholarship recipients a fulfilling academic journey in Taiwan.
Both Taiwan MOFA and TaiwanICDF Scholarship programs offer Belizean students opportunities to pursue higher education in Taiwan.
They serve as a pillar of Taiwan-Belize partnership and play a vital role in promoting people-to-people exchanges.
The programs are one of the core missions of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Belize.
