By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On August 12, 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture met with Citrus Products of Belize Limited (CPBL).

The meeting brought together key stakeholders to discuss the future of Belize’s citrus industry.

The meeting focused on how the government, farmers, and CPBL can collaborate to revive and strengthen this vital sector.

Attendees included the Minister of Agriculture, the CEO of the Ministry of Agriculture, technical personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture, representatives from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), and staff from CPBL.

The discussion emphasized the importance of continued efforts to support the citrus industry, ensuring its sustainability and growth.

Following the meeting, the group toured CPBL’s facilities, starting with the nursery facility, which has the capacity to produce 130,000 plants.

This nursery has already contributed to the planting of 177 acres of oranges, demonstrating its crucial role in the industry’s revival.

They also visited the new coconut water processing plant, which has the capacity to process between 10,000 to 14,000 coconuts per hour.

This facility represents a significant investment in expanding Belize’s agricultural processing capabilities.

Additionally, the group toured the new pasteurizing plant, designed to extend the shelf life of various products, including the Tetrapak Caribbean Pride products produced by CPBL for both local and export markets. Notably, about half of the Tetrapak juices produced by CPBL are exported, while the other half serves the local market.

The Ministry noted that this collaborative effort underscores the commitment of the Government, CPBL, and farmers to work together to ensure the long-term viability and success of Belize’s citrus industry.
