The Belize Zoo congratulates 2024 Sharon Matola Conservation Scholarship Recipient Jocelyn Zavala

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center (TBZTEC) announced that Jocelyn Zavala is the 2024 recipient of the Sharon Matola Conservation Scholarship.

Zavala will receive BZ $10,000 to support her studies in Natural Resource Management at the University of Belize, starting August 2024.

Zavala’s passion for nature and ecosystems, coupled with her concern over the environmental degradation in Belize, has driven her to focus on conservation.

Her goal is to deepen her understanding of environmental issues and work towards sustainable solutions through collaboration with local communities, government agencies, and NGOs.

With a strong academic record and active involvement in extracurricular activities such as the UB Environmental Club and an internship at the University of Belize’s Environmental Research Institute, Zavala brings both enthusiasm and dedication to her field.

Hailing from St. Matthew’s Village in the Cayo District, a key area for TBZTEC’s conservation efforts, she is well-positioned to make a significant impact.

Upon receiving her award at The Belize Zoo,Zavala expressed her heartfelt gratitude, stating, “This is something very impactful in my life, and I am very honoured and grateful for this opportunity. Being chosen for the scholarship will allow me to focus on my studies rather than financial constraints. Thank you for believing in my potential to be a conservation advocate.”
