By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola managed a better second half but fell 5-1 to Club Deportivo Águila of El Salvador in the CONCACAF Central American Cup on Wednesday at Estadio Las Delicias in Santa Tecla, El Salvador.

After the 4-1 thumping they got in the first half, Port only allowed one more goal by Argentine Marcelo Herberth Díaz in the 67th minute for the final 5-1.

A brace each by Brazilian Dionatan ‘Tinga’ Machado and Colombian Carlos Salazar had given the home squad an ample lead in the first half.

The lone good moment for Port Layola came when Colombian Miguel García scored after Rene Leslie worked his way into the Salvadoran defence in the 34th minute.

Águila, who were up 2-0 at the time, on 4th and 18th minute goals by Machado, responded immediately with Salazar’s first goal one minute later in the 35th. Salazar scored again in the 37th.

Port have been suffering in their first-ever international participation, falling twice at home (4-1 to Guatemala’s Antigua GFC and 6-1 to Honduras’ Olimpia), prior to Wednesday’s pounding in El Salvador.

They remain at the bottom of Group C without a point, having conceded 15 goals while scoring only three goals.

After Wednesday’s match, Antigua, who edged Panamanian side CA Independiente (CAI) 2-1 on Tuesday in Antigua, Guatemala, now lead the group with seven points from three games, followed by Olimpia with six points from two matches. Águila now have four points from two matches. Like Port, CAI have no points from two outings, but their goal differential (-4) is better than Port’s (-12).

Port’s final match will be against CAI on Wednesday, August 21, at 4:00 pm at Estadio Rommel Fernández in Panama City.
