Government outlines rationale for Belmopan hospital relocation

By Horace Palacio: In a statement released today, the Government of Belize provided a detailed explanation for its decision to relocate the proposed Belmopan Tertiary Hospital. The decision, approved by Cabinet in April 2024, aims to ensure the hospital’s optimal accessibility and effectiveness in serving the healthcare needs of Belizeans.

The original site, proposed by the University of Belize, was deemed less than ideal due to several factors: its distance from major highways, necessitating a lengthy and indirect route through residential areas; the lack of essential utilities like water and electricity; and the additional costs and logistical challenges associated with constructing access roads. These factors would have hindered timely access to the hospital, particularly for residents of the Cayo District.

In contrast, the newly acquired property offers numerous advantages. Its proximity to major highways facilitates efficient patient transfers from western and southern districts, while its location near the Belmopan Airstrip enables swift airlifts. Additionally, the improved road connectivity and accessibility via public transportation will benefit the residents of Belmopan.

The Government also emphasized its commitment to fiscal responsibility. After careful evaluation by both private and government valuers, the final purchase price of $6.9 million for the 15-acre property was negotiated, representing a significant savings compared to the landowners’ initial asking price.

Ultimately, the Government’s decision underscores its dedication to providing universal health coverage and ensuring the highest standards of healthcare delivery for all Belizeans. The relocation of the tertiary-level hospital, in partnership with the University of Belize, will create a world-class healthcare facility and teaching hospital in an ideal location, meeting the diverse needs of the population and advancing the overall healthcare landscape in Belize.
