By Breaking Belize News Staff: Ada Toro, 38, accused of scamming a mother of three by impersonating Minister Cordel Hyde on Facebook, has reached an out-of-court settlement with her victim,. The agreement was finalized this Monday in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
Toro allegedly used a fake Facebook account bearing Minister Hyde’s identity to deceive the complainant into paying $500 in exchange for a food stall on Mahogany Street. The woman, believing she was dealing with the Minister, made two separate deposits: $300 on February 12 and $200 on February 13, 2024. However, she soon realized she had been defrauded and reported the incident to the police.
In court, Toro paid $300 towards the $500 she had swindled. She agreed to pay the remaining $200 by Thursday, August 22, 2024. This settlement allowed Toro to avoid a potential prison sentence or fine for obtaining property by deception.
The victim, a mother of three, expressed relief outside the courtroom, stating, “All I want back is my hard-earned money.” She confirmed that she willingly settled the matter out of court, only wanting her money returned.
Minister Hyde, who had no involvement in the scam, clarified to police that Toro was not authorized to act on his behalf and had no permission to use his likeness. Toro initially faced two counts of obtaining property by deception but has now managed to avoid further legal consequences by settling with Gotoy.
