Craftsman remanded to prison for allegedly assaulting man with pipe

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Colin Dustan Conrad Cain, a 58-year-old self-employed craftsman from Burrell Boom, has been remanded to Belize Central Prison after failing to post bail on charges of aggravated assault and wounding. Cain, known in his community for designing fashion earrings, is accused of assaulting a fellow resident with a nearly five-foot-long pipe over the weekend.

Cain appeared unrepresented in Court #2, where he pleaded guilty with a cause, claiming self-defense. “I was hit first, and I had to defend myself,” Cain told the Magistrate. He also faced a second charge of wounding Jenkins, to which he pleaded not guilty, stating, “I am not guilty of intentionally doing it.”

Despite Cain’s claim of self-defense, the case will proceed to trial. The sitting Magistrate granted Cain bail set at $2,000 with one surety of the same amount. Conditions of the bail include a no-contact order with the complainant and other prosecution witnesses, maintaining a distance of 100 yards from the complainant, and avoiding any further charges of violence.

Unable to meet the bail requirements, Cain was remanded to Belize Central Prison until his next court date on September 30, 2024.
