By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola conceded a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Panamanian Club Atletico Independiente (CAI) in their final match in the 2024 CONCACAF Central American Cup at the Rommel Fernández Stadium in Panama City.
Aimar Modelo scored the only goal of the match in the 84th minute to give the Panamanian side their first win of the competition after two losses. Captain Ian Gaynair missed a brilliant opportunity in the 88th minute, off a cross by Shaun Young, but his shot went wide to the right of the goal.
The match suffered a 40+ minute delay due to a thunderstorm in Panama City about four minutes into the second half. The match, which started 4:00 pm (5:00 pm Panama time), resumed when it should have been over, at 5:57 pm (6:57 pm Panama time).
At 5:52 pm, the game officials, led by the commissar and Mexican referee Katia Garcia, stepped on the pitch, while it was still raining, to check the conditions to see if the match could continue. CAI and Port Layola players returned to the pitch a few minutes later, did a couple of warm-up exercises, and play restarted at 5:57 pm.
Port Layola finished their first-ever Concacaf competition with four losses. This match in Panama, though they didn’t score, was their best result. Prior to that, they dropped the first three matches by lopsided scores: 4-1 to Antigua of Guatemala, 6-1 to Olimpia of Honduras, and 5-1 to Águila of El Salvador.
