By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Inter-American Commission has issued a scathing evaluation of the Venezuelan government’s repression of protestors, human rights defenders, and perceived opponents.
“The regime in power is sowing terror as a tool to silence the citizenry and perpetuate the ruling authoritarian regime,” the Commission stated.
The UN’s Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela has highlighted an alarming resurgence in repressive tactics, including the killing of protestors, arbitrary detentions, and political persecution.
This resurgence underscores “the accelerated reactivation of the repressive machinery that was never dismantled.”
The UN High Commissioner has noted a “climate of fear” in Venezuela, calling for the release of those detained arbitrarily.
However, the High Commissioner’s office in Venezuela remains suspended and operates from Panama.
Venezuelan defenders, both domestic and international, are working tirelessly to document the attacks and persecution of those advocating for democratic reforms and adherence to international electoral standards.
The Venezuelan NGO Foro Penal provides daily updates on detentions amid a shrinking space for civil society.
On August 15, the National Assembly passed a controversial NGO law that critics argue is designed to stifle civil society further. International Service for Human Rights Eleanor Openshaw condemned the law, emphasizing the urgent need for political and financial support for Venezuelan human rights defenders.
On August 16, the Organization of American States adopted a resolution calling for independent vote tallies and an end to human rights violations.
The upcoming Human Rights Council session in Geneva is expected to address the renewal of mandates for the Fact-Finding Mission and OHCHR, crucial for documenting violations and guiding necessary reforms.
