By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A new nursery for native trees is being developed at the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) Big Falls retreat, spearheaded by Norman Budna.
This initiative is part of a broader reforestation project funded and managed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), spanning Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras.
As the 2024 summer camp concluded, local youths participated in workshops to learn about managing native tree nurseries and caring for seedlings before transplanting.
The camp, involving communities supported by TIDE, aimed to equip young participants with practical skills and knowledge in reforestation.
The enthusiastic youths are set to share their newfound expertise with their families, friends, and teachers as the new school year begins in September.
Inspired by their experiences, some expressed a desire to start their own backyard nurseries, with one child even planning to plant trees and track their growth annually on his birthday.
