By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Lands and Surveys Talbert Brackett stated at a press conference on the proposed University of Belize hospital on Monday that the original landowner applied for a change of land use and to subdivide the parcels, which must be vetted by officers in the Lands Department. He emphasized that there is no conflict of interest on the part of the Government.
There are various methods of valuing land based on its value and location and any misuse can be challenged in court. In this case, the size of the hospital land was compared with a similar-sized parcel, with deductions for green space and road networks. A private land surveyor is responsible for providing the result to the Lands Office.
Brackett objected to the characterization of the property as “valuing bush,” citing that there are roads and development of the parcels – subject to final approval from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing.
The final valuation of the Government was for $3.2 million per parcel; Brackett said he was not aware of any other valuation.
