By Aaron Humes: Albert area representative Tracey Taegar-Panton has refuted claims by United Democratic Party (UDP) chairman Michael Peyrefitte that she has “constructively resigned” from the UDP by challenging the party’s leadership in recent weeks.
Taegar-Panton said on social media this evening, “I have not ‘constructively resigned’ and I am not going anywhere.” She added that the international community is paying attention to what is going on.
On Wednesday, the Alliance for Democracy (AFD) issued a response to the formal rejection of Taegar-Panton’s latest petition trying to trigger a recall of Moses “Shyne” Barrow as leader.
The Alliance described as “baseless” the claim that Taegar-Panton had turned her back on the UDP, saying it was rooted solely in Panton’s public stance—along with that of other senior party officials—against repeated violations of the Party’s constitution. Peyrefitte does not have the authority to make such a claim, it says, and so he is being “absurd” and “disrespectful”, especially considering that Taegar-Panton and other senior party officials have been deliberately excluded from the party’s communication channels.
Concerning the decision to dismiss the petition for recall, it appears that the chairman has not accepted the signatures of delegates representing Port Loyola, Caribbean Shores, and Belize Rural South (which have all had their standard bearers recently replaced). This reduces the valid number of signatures from 208 to 173, short of the 176 needed.
