By Breaking Belize News Staff: Monique Meisha Escalante, a 31-year-old Immigration Officer from Corozal Town, who is currently on interdiction due to a pending criminal case for theft, appeared in court on Thursday. Escalante, accompanied by her attorney Leslie Hamilton, faced a Senior Magistrate in Court #2, where she received full disclosure of the evidence against her. The disclosure included 104 pages of documents and three CDs, which the police will use to build their case.
The court informed Escalante that her next appearance, scheduled for November 8, 2024, will be for a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) rather than a trial, as the case is being handled on indictment. Escalante was initially arraigned on March 25, 2024, for allegedly demanding $3,000 USD (equivalent to $6,000 BZD) from a visitor on March 15, 2024, while on duty at Philip Goldson International Airport.
The case continues as Escalante awaits the PI to determine if there is sufficient evidence for the matter to proceed to trial.
