National Health Insurance leaves Social Security to become a statutory board

Posted: Friday, August 30, 2024. 4:41 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: National Health Insurance (NHI) has been growing by leaps and bounds in coverage of the population for primary health care, and now it is ready to make a big change.

Today, Cabinet announced that it has given its approval for the repeal of Part VI of the Social Security Act, Chapter 44, revised edition 2003, which establishes the National Health Insurance as part of the Social Security institution, to introduce legislation to create the National Health Insurance Authority as a Statutory Board under the Office of the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.

During the Budget Debate in March, Prime Minister John Briceno said it was a “great and massive accomplishment” that NHI now covers 269 thousand Belizeans in four districts – Belize, Corozal, Orange Walk, and Toledo – with plans to expand to the Cayo District later this year.

NHI is also receiving a steady stream of funds from the profits obtained by Belize Government Lotteries Limited from sales of Boledo and Lottery which are expected to surpass $100 million by year’s end.
