By Breaking Belize News Staff: An interdicted police officer, 27-year-old Police Constable Dexter Diego, is set to stand trial at the January 2025 session of the High Court for allegedly having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old minor on five different occasions. The trial is scheduled to begin on January 13, 2025.
Diego was granted bail in the sum of $15,000 late this evening after a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola in Court #1. The prosecutor presented multiple statements, reports, and documents, leading to the conclusion that there was sufficient evidence to establish a prima facie case against Diego. As a result, he was committed to stand trial at the High Court.
Diego, who was initially arraigned on August 11, 2023, on five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with the minor, was represented by attorney Leslie Hamilton during the PI. Following the conclusion of the inquiry, his old bail was revoked, and new bail was set at $15,000 with three sureties of $5,000 each, which he met.
As part of his bail conditions, Diego must attend all court sessions, report to the Dangriga Police Station once a week, and avoid any contact with the complainant or her family. He is also prohibited from being within 100 yards of the complainant’s home, school, workplace, or any location she frequents, and cannot leave the jurisdiction without the court’s permission.
The allegations against Diego involve five instances of unlawful sexual intercourse with the minor between January and March 2023, including when the complainant was just 13 years and 11 months old. The last alleged incident occurred on March 26, 2023.
