Teenager fined for first offense after being caught smoking weed in public

By Breaking Belize News Staff: An 18-year-old, James Aaron Hernandez, who will turn 19 in just a few days, received his first conviction in court on Thursday for smoking cannabis. Hernandez, an employee of Celebrity Restaurant and a resident of the Fresh Pond area, Burrell Boom Village, was caught by police in the Pinks Alley area of Belize City on the evening of August 28, 2024.

Hernandez, who lives on Hendyside Street in the city, was observed by police with an object in his mouth emitting smoke and a strong aroma of marijuana. Upon noticing the officers, Hernandez dropped the object, which was later confirmed to contain cannabis.

On Thursday morning, Hernandez appeared in court unrepresented and wasted no time in pleading guilty to the offense. He explained that he was passing through the area after leaving work and requested a fine, emphasizing that he is not a troublemaker.

The Chief Magistrate imposed a non-custodial sentence, fining Hernandez $100 plus a $5.00 court cost, which he must pay by September 30, 2024. If he fails to pay, he will face one month of imprisonment.
