By Horace Palacio: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has announced the commencement of a marine survey in the waters between San Pedro and Caye Caulker. This survey is a critical step in the installation of a 34.5 kV submarine cable, which forms a part of the 7th Power Project, aimed at interconnecting the two islands. The project is scheduled for completion later this year.
The survey is being conducted by two vessels, the “Sea Date” and the “Lazy Pelican,” both equipped with specialized data collection tools and accompanied by active divers in the water. These operations, which began recently, are expected to conclude by Thursday, September 5, 2024.
BEL has issued a public notice to all mariners, boaters, and divers operating in the area, requesting them to maintain a safe distance from the survey vessels. This measure is essential to ensure the safety of BEL’s technicians and divers, as well as to protect the integrity of the data being collected.
BEL has expressed its appreciation for the public’s cooperation and understanding during this period and has apologized for any inconvenience caused by the survey activities.
For further information, BEL encourages the public to contact them at 0-800-BEL-CARE or 0-800-235-2273.
