By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a highly anticipated clash, defending champions Port Layola FC will take on Verdes FC at the FFB Stadium on Sunday at 6:00 pm in the last week of the first round of the Premier League of Belize’s 2024-2025 Opening Season.
Port Layola FC, currently in third place with seven points, will be determined to pull off a third vital win as they continue their quest to retain their title.
Verdes FC, in second place with nine points, are looking to close the gap with league leaders Progresso FC. This match promises to be a test of strength and strategy as both teams vie for crucial points.
Port Layola are counting on Colombian Andrés Orozco, who scored a brace in their last outing, along with Gilroy Thurton and Rene Leslie. However, they will be without last year’s top goal scorer, Latrell Middleton, who is out with an injured toe suffered in their 2-0 win over the Bandits.
Verdes will rely on their forwards Krisean Lopez, who leads all scorers with four goals, and Colombian Yubeiquer Arenas, who follows with three. They are also confident in the back with goalkeeper Woodrow West, who has only conceded once.
Port Layola are playing in Belmopan at the FFB Stadium because their home field, the Marion Jones Sports Complex, is unavailable. That’s the same reason they played their midweek match against Wagiya there.
