By Horace Palacio: This morning’s flag-raising ceremony at the San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town Hall was a reminder of the complexities of Belizean politics. While the event was intended to kick off the festivities leading up to Belize’s 43rd Independence, it also highlighted divisions within the People’s United Party (PUP).
Seasoned politician and former Minister, Hector Silva, was the guest speaker, an honor bestowed upon him by Mayor Earl Trapp and his councilors. Silva, a proud villager and lifelong PUP stalwart, spoke eloquently about his dedication to Belize and its people.
However, the event was tinged with irony. Two PUP representatives from the Twin Towns held their endorsement convention on the same day, seemingly ignoring Silva, the eldest and most experienced PUP member in Belize. This snub did not go unnoticed.
Silva, known affectionately as “Don Hector,” addressed the oversight with characteristic grace and wit. “Did they hurt me? Absolutely not. Did they hurt themselves? Badly,” he remarked, drawing parallels to the political misfortunes of Assad Shoman.
Despite the political maneuvering, Silva’s popularity remains undiminished. His tireless service to the community, from students to market vendors, has earned him the admiration of people across Belize. His message to his detractors was clear: “Let the pit bull alone.”
While some may seek to sideline older figures like Silva, his enduring popularity and unwavering commitment to the people make him a force to be reckoned with.
In closing, Silva thanked Mayor Trapp and his councilors for the honor of speaking at the ceremony. He reaffirmed his dedication to Belize, reminding everyone that even in retirement, he remains a “tough cookie” and a servant of the people.
