By Aaron Humes: Not even two weeks after agreeing to be, then standing down as United Democratic Party (UDP) Standard Bearer for Belize Rural South, broadcaster Ramon Vasquez was seen at the People’s United Party’s Orange Walk rally Saturday night for Party Leader John Briceño and the Orange Walk Standard Bearers.
Vasquez told us this evening in a statement, “For me, to serve the people means to provide a helping hand up out of economic sorrows and into higher heights. Assisting people from all walks of life means to unceasingly try to solve their problems and varied situations. My Christian values, vision and direction to help people is for a political party and government to operate in unity because in unity there is strength and a house divided shall fall.”
That may be a reference to the current internal turmoil in the UDP which has seen multiple petitions aimed at removing Moses “Shyne” Barrow as Party Leader and the “constructive resignation” of Tracey Taegar-Panton, Patrick Faber, John Saldivar and Beverly Williams as communicated by Party chairman Michael Peyrefitte.
Vasquez previously said he had to decline the standard bearer position in order to maintain the neutrality of his Belize Broadcasting Network TV station.
He added that he still believes he can make a valuable contribution to national development, citing “an increased sophistication and acceleration of new methodology, triggering an improved hi-tech customer service oriented system” as his dream.
While what capacity he will serve remains to be seen, the PUP will likely be happy to have another hand on deck as it prepares to seek a second consecutive mandate from the Belizean people next year.
