By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, was honored with a prestigious award recognizing his pivotal role in the advancement of Belize’s cattle industry.
Minister Mai expressed his gratitude stating, “Although I am chosen to be the recipient, I share this award with my Technical Staff and the Belize Livestock Producers Association team for working diligently in growing the Industry.”
Over the past four years, Belize’s cattle industry has experienced significant expansion, generating more than $90 million BZ.
Mai highlighted the growth in industry metrics, noting that cattle prices surged from $1.60 BZ per pound before 2020 to $3.10 in 2024.
“Millions are now being invested in genetics and improved pastures as the industry expands,” Mai added.
Mai also extended his thanks to Frank Rempel, Chair of the Cattle Association of Blue Creek, and all the ranchers of Blue Creek for their support and recognition.
“I hope and pray that the industry continues to grow having in mind the protection and conservation of our natural resources and the environment,” Minister Mai expressed.
The Minister concluded his remarks with appreciation for the Association and the farmers who have contributed to the industry’s success.
